I. Introduction to the Program

Established in 1991, the program of English provides instruction in cultivating English skills such as speaking, reading, listening and writing, and conducts research in linguistics, literature, language development, and culture of English-speaking areas.

The Department of English is a dynamic student-centered learning environment made up of teachers and scholars from both China and English-speaking countries who seek to create a space for high quality learning and teaching of English.

Duration:4 years Maximum:6 years

 

II. Goals

We offer instruction in literature and general linguistics so as to help students acquire knowledge of literature and language and to develop the skills necessary for professional careers or graduate programs. In these courses we will mentor students in collaborative research and creative opportunities.

III. Graduation Requirements

Students to be offered Bachelor of Arts in English are supposed to complete the following requirements:

1. Language: Demonstrate a mastery of advanced reading, writing, analytical and interpretive techniques suitable for a variety of academic, creative, and professional settings;

2. Critical thinking: Demonstrate an ability to use knowledge of Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science and analyze specific problems critically;

3. Academic research: Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of linguistic systems and the historic development of language;

4. Culture: Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural or historical context of major literary works in English;

5. Social knowledge: Knowledge of laws, regulations, and etiquette and sense of social responsibility;

6. Professional ethics: Law-abiding and clear about one’s rights and obligations;

7. Communication Skills: Demonstrate the ability and a certain level of language proficiency in using communicative strategies to solve practical problems;

8. The dissertation should be written in English with Chinese abstract.

9. To get the certificate of the bachelor degree, candidates’ Chinese ability should be higher than HSK Level 4.
