Aim of the Program

The program aims   at cultivating high-level English talents with solid professional knowledge,   strong scientific research ability, and all-around development in morality,   intelligence, physique and aesthetic. The   specific requirements are following: prospective students of this program should be trained to be talents   in English language and literature and its relevant disciplines with wide and   solid theory as well as systematic and well-informed knowledge. They can   grasp the latest progress and development trend of the subject. They have the   ability of doing research independently with serious and realistic   attitudes towards study; the ability of reading relevant books and   periodicals with proficiency in English; and the certain ability of   translation and interpretation. They are wanted to adroitly use computers and   Internet in their scientific research. They are hoped to respectively adjust   English teaching work (including such specialized courses as literature,   translation and interpretation, linguistics) and foreign affairs or   translation to different levels of school and to governmental agencies,   enterprises and institutions.

Training Mode

1. After the enrollment, the instructor   is responsible for reviewing the postgraduate’s development plan and his   professional development.

2. Teaching forms rely on the type   and nature of the courses taught, such as classroom presentation and   discussion, extracurricular reading and report writing.

3. Focus on cultivating   postgraduates' ability to knowledge acquisition, scientific research,   academic innovation, academic identification and academic communication.
  4. Focus on postgraduates’ ideological and political education, cultivating   their cooperative spirit, and constantly improving their overall quality

Academic Forum(Master)

First, the school regularly invites experts to   offer lectures related to English language and literature to introduce the   latest research trends at home and abroad. It is required to attend lectures   no less than 15 times per student and write an innovative 5000-word paper on   a certain topic after the lectures. Students will take 1 credit after   reaching the requirement. Second, in the fourth semester, each student should   take turns to give at least 2 leading-edge lectures, which are related to the   latest progress and   development trend of the subject. 1 credit will be earned when the   presentation meets teacher’s satisfaction. His assessment includes pass or   fail.


Discussion Class(Master)

1

In   the third semester, the discussion class will be held monthly by the   professional instructor. It will be based on the research direction   (linguistics, literature and translation), and the instructor or   postgraduates should formulate the discussion topic in advance (mainly   related to their research topics, their references, the latest papers   published domestically and internationally). Postgraduates should fully   participate in the discussion, debate academically and be guided by the   instructor. Postgraduates should, after attending the discussion class, write   a 500-word report in English, which will be submitted to the instructor for   his review. And each postgraduate is required to sign in to confirm his   attendance. The final score will be given according to the record of   attendance and the written report, and the passer can get 1 credit.


Social Practice

(Master)

There   are 2 kinds of practice in social practice, teaching practice and translation   practice. From the second semester of the second year, postgraduate should   seek an internship by himself, and his assessment finally will be based on   the written evaluation materials offered by the internship. The assessment of   translation practice is divided into the following cases: those who provide   interpreting services for institutions and enterprises need written   certification of at least 16-hour service and written evaluation of   interpretation quality, which shall be provided by the user; those who   provide translating services for institutions and enterprises need written   certification of at least 10,000 characters and written evaluation of   translation quality, which shall be provided by the user; the translation   service for the important international conference shall offer certification   and evaluation of the translation quality written by the organizer; the free   translator shall provide no less than 0.5- million-character accumulative   translations, which are not officially published . The assessment results are   divided into pass and fail.


Mid-term Assessment

From   the sixth week to twelfth week of the fourth semester, a mid-term assessment   will be conducted in conjunction with the opening report of the master's   dissertation. The assessment includes ideological performance, course study,   research ability, dissertation opening report, health status and comprehensive examination of subject. Those   who pass the mid-term assessment can continue his completion of dissertation;   those who fail to pass will be dealt with in accordance with the relevant regulations   of Student Status Management   Regulations of Shandong University.

1.Normative Requirements

The   master's dissertation,written in English, should be completed independently   under the guidance of his instructor. And there should be no less than 30,000   words in his dissertation. His thesis should have theoretical value or   practical value in a certain field of the subject. Its core academic concept   should be clearly explained and its design should be rigorous with   appropriate and effective research method. Its thesis should be supported by   relevant academic theories with true and reliable data, and sufficient and   consistent arguments. Objective literature review, and correctly and clearly   marked references are also required in this dissertation.  

2.Writing   Process Requirements

Postgraduate   should complete his topic selection in the third semester under the guidance   of instructor. The topic must be scientific, enterprising and feasible, which   should be a combination of the National Natural Science Foundation, the   Doctoral Fund Project, key scientific research projects at/above the   provincial level, key subject projects, and key research base projects.

Postgraduate should submit a writing plan during the   middle period of the fourth semester, and make a report to the steering   group. After discussion, if his topic is considered to be appropriate and his   writing plan is feasible, then he can formally carry out research and set out   his writing on submitting a literature review with at least 5000 words   closely related to this topic.

Postgraduate are required to report his progress of   dissertation every 1 to 2 months in a meeting where the instructor, the   steering group and the relevant personnel should attend to help solve   difficulties and give timely guidance to his dissertation, promoting his   completion.

     The postgraduate should, 3 to 5 months before applying for the dissertation   defense, report his progress of the dissertation and his results obtained to   the instructor and the members of steering group , so that he can modify and   improve the dissertation.

After the   finalization, all the dissertations, except those inspected by the graduate   school, will be sent to the external school for anonymous review. If there   are major defects after reviewing, the dissertation shall be revised or the   defense shall be postponed.

The   dissertation should be written in English with Chinese abstract no less than 1000   words.

To get the   certificate of the master degree, candidates’ Chinese ability should be   higher than HSK Level 3.

After the   completion of dissertation, relevant personnel, such as the instructor,   members of the steering group, chairman of academic degree evaluation   sub-committee, the dean and the director of the major, shall carefully   organize the review of the dissertation in accordance with Working Rules for   Masters and Doctoral Degrees awarded by Shandong University, in order to   guarantee the quality of the degree award.

Master, who completes his training program while meeting the following two conditions, can apply for graduation in advance: First, publish a related academic paper in the CSSCI(the master should be the first author, and Shandong University should be the first unit), or published two academic papers in the extended edition of CSSCI(the master should be the first author, and Shandong University should be the first unit); second, his dissertation is passed anonymously.
